Short Film - Director of Photography
As the Director of Photography on "KONIN," my aim was to visually translate Matilda's sensitive direction and Sravya's evocative script. Set against the beautiful yet subtly melancholic backdrop of the Cornish countryside, we wanted to capture the children's last day in their beloved field with a sense of both nostalgia and the impending loss. We focused on natural light, utilizing the soft Cornish light to enhance the innocence of the children and the beauty of their natural playground. The handheld camera work aimed to follow their energy and create a sense of intimacy, drawing the audience into their world. We also paid close attention to the textures of the field and the changing light throughout the day, subtly foreshadowing the transformation to come. It was crucial that the visuals supported the emotional arc of the story, particularly the perspective of the youngest child, Pidge, and the underlying sense of something precious being lost. Collaborating with Matilda was a fantastic experience, and we worked closely to ensure the cinematography amplified the film's themes of childhood, friendship, and the inevitable march of progress.
About
"KONIN" captures a fleeting moment in childhood as four kids spend their last day in a cherished Cornish field before development encroaches. Through the eyes of the youngest, the film explores the subtle heartbreak of lost spaces and the bittersweet end of an era, hinted at by the presence of a rabbit and a gun. It's a small story about big change, seen through the lens of innocent play.
